Glowing condoms!

• Three British teens, two 14-year-olds and one 13-year-old—have proposed an idea for a new type of condom that could detect sexually transmitted diseases amongst intimate partners.
• Their hypothetical condom, which they’re calling the 'S.T.EYE', would have molecules built into the rubber that attach to specific bacteria and viruses. These molecules would then cause the condom to fluoresce different colours in low light, depending on the pathogens present. For example, the condom could glow green for chlamydia, yellow for herpes, purple for human papillomavrius or blue for syphilis.
• The proposal won the trio the top prize in the U.K.’s TeenTech Awards, and they have already reportedly been approached by condom companies.
• The idea of a colour-changing condom presents other problems, like whether a person would choose not to use condoms for fear of being found out by their partner, or would some fear the risk of violence if either partner were to become upset at the results. Still, the idea has received praise from public health officials who see it as a novel way of promoting condom use that could help prevent thousands of infections.
