The Biggest Eyes in the Animal Kingdom!
- Colossal Squid Has World's Biggest Eyes.
- Researchers say that colossal squid (Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni) have the largest eyes ever studied in the animal kingdom. Measuring 27cm (11in) in diameter, each eye is roughly the size of a soccer ball. “They are probably the largest eyes that have ever existed,” says Eric Warrant, a professor at the University of Lund in Sweden and an expert on animal vision.
- The deep ocean is so dark that bigger eyes probably don't help the giant squids pinpoint and hunt small food. However, drawing in even a bit more light could help them see larger shadowy shifts in the depths like those produced by an enormous predator. And Help them detect a moving sperm whale from 394 feet (120 meters) with those big eyes.
